Todd & Duncan: The People and Place Behind the Yarn
At Pitti Filati, Scottish cashmere producer Todd & Duncan presented Earth Tone Colors, a collection of cashmere yarns inspired by the landscape around Loch Leven.
The stand brought Todd & Duncan’s heritage into the fair through the landscape and the people who make the yarn, while keeping the collection at its centre.
Portraits of mill workers were printed at enormous scale on transparent film around the central area. Their faces gave the booth its strongest visual presence.
Smaller black-and-white photographs showed the landscape near the mill. Recordings made at the loch carried its sounds through the stand. Its muted tones were there in the collection too.
The film followed cashmere production. Faces seen in the portraits appeared again, now in motion at the mill.
Packs of raw cashmere fibre added another texture to the space. The material had a presence of its own alongside the finished yarns.
The booth’s colours stayed close to Earth Tone Colors. The portraits, film, photographs and sound gave the collection an atmosphere drawn from Todd & Duncan’s own world.
The cashmere remained at the centre of the conversations at Pitti Filati. Around it were the landscape, the raw fibre and the people whose work is part of Todd & Duncan’s heritage.
